CANASTOTA - Playing without star setter Justin Smith, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill's boys volleyball team defeated Canastota 25-15, 25-16, 25-16 on Thursday night.

"Certainly some people stepped up tonight and played well," said VVS coach Jim Burton. "(Ryan) Matt has come on strong and really picked up his net game."

While Smith had the flu, the rest of the Red Devils (15-2) flew to a 16-5 lead in Game 1 with Jordan Johnson and Mark Dixon leading the way with exceptional net play. Johnson had a block to put VVS up 7-4 and Dixon followed with a nice kill that fell just inside the back line.

The Raiders (8-8) went on a 4-0 run following a time-out before a serving error gave the ball back to the visitors.

Dixon finished the game off with a nice tip over two Canastota defenders.

Canastota began Game 2 on a 6-2 run before VVS' Shane Sullivan slammed a kill down off a free ball at the net. A serving error by the hosts and kills from Dixon and Justin Loboda then gave the visitors the lead at 11-8.

The hosts added two points when Nick Darcangelo had a nice tip over the net that dropped right inside the right line and a Red Devil fell into the net following a hit.

The teams exchanged serving errors before VVS went on a 7-2 run to go ahead 20-13.

Matt and Dixon had back-to-back kills and Dixon ended the second game with a beautiful tip that found a seam between two Raiders who were above the net trying for a block.

Game 3 found Canastota in a familiar situation. Ahead 12-9, the hosts struggled as Sullivan served 14 straight points to give the Red Devils an insurmountable lead.

"Our net game is improving," said Canastota coach Shay Sgroi. "But, like with tonight, we get ahead and we lose some control."

Canastota's Alex Lang added three straight points before a Keith Lumbard kill ended the final game on a nice pass from Matt.

"We have been moving our feet and communicating well over the last few weeks and that has gotten us to where we are," said Matt. "It helps our team play well due to the fact we are all friends and we get along great together."

Matt finished with four kills and three blocks and Mike Blair had 12 digs for the visitors.

Jeff Willis finished with an ace, 13 assists, three digs, a block and a kill and Lang had seven kills and three blocks for the hosts.

"When we take control at the net, either spiking or blocking, we win," said Burton. "None of this happens (front row play), without my back row."
